February 10th, 2012 – Training

So I wrote this last month, but with so much going on, I never had a chance to post. Now I’m stuck playing catch-up lol

Hey my name is Shar-Dey Phipps-Walker. I am 23 years old, I belong to Lac Seul First Nation and I was born and raised in the city of Toronto. I will be the Resource Mobilization Assistant in my host country of Jamaica. I’m sure you already know that based on my bio on here, but whatevs..

Currently, I am in Ottawa, and we are coming to the end of our pre-departure training. The training has been really informative and traditionally based which I thought was really good. This week has allowed me to get a better understanding of those I will be working with and everyone seems pretty cool. We learned a lot about dealing with culture shock and coping with being away from home. I have been to Jamaica a number of times, because my father lived in there for a number of years, but I still found the training helpful.

I will be going home for the weekend and leaving for Jamaica on Monday and I’m really excited to have those couple of days to tie up a few loose ends and spend some time with family. I am really excited to be taking part in this initiative in hopes of making positive change not only in myself, but in others. I really see this trip as being the beginning of the rest of my life.
